Home Reading
Each evening your child will bring home a book to read to you OR with you! If they are struggling, frustrated or reluctant, YOU READ it to them and encourage them to join in on a second reading. The goal for September is to become more engaged with books, to have fun, and to learn to match the words they say with the ones they see. The books sent home should ALWAYS be easy. You may see the same book two or three times. This is good for children as it helps them to gain confidence. You don't need to write down what book you read, just initial the date on the homework calendar.

Here are a few guidelines to help you:
- Remember you are your child's first and most important teacher. Have confidence in yourself. You will not "do the "wrong thing" if you are patient.
- Do not expect word-perfect reading! She/he doesn't need to know EVERY word on the page. If he's stuck, tell him the word. EXPECT to tell him names, places, and words like 'about'.
- Remember your child is just learning to read, so have fun!
- Please do not put undue pressure on yourself or your child! If you or your child are ill or tired, skip that night.
- Talk about what your are reading both during and after. Encourage them to ask questions and to think about what is happening. Reading is no fun if you are just sounding out words.
- It is okay for your child to read and reread a book. This helps them to practice reading with expression and confidence!
